The Department of Health Sciences at James Madison University is accepting applications for an Academic Unit Head (AUH). This position is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment at the Associate/Full Professor rank with consideration of tenure upon appointment. The Academic Unit Head reports to the Dean of the College of Health and Behavioral Studies (CHBS) and serves on the CHBS Leadership Council. Health Sciences is one of eight academic units in the College. The desired starting date is July 1, 2017.

Growth at James Madison University has enabled The College of Health and Behavioral Studies to open two new dynamic leadership opportunities for a Department of Health Sciences and a Department of Health Professions. Previously administered within a single unit, academic and administrative functions supporting nine undergraduate and graduate degrees are being reorganized into these two distinctive, autonomous departments. The successful candidate will join a strong and engaged faculty at one of the nation’s outstanding public universities.

The Department of Health Sciences is a thriving academic unit with 16 full-time faculty members, 1,615 undergraduate majors and significant contributions to general education. The department offers the Bachelor of Science in Health Sciences degree, serving students who are preparing for professional careers in the health sciences and for entry into professional degree programs.

The successful candidate will:
– Hold an earned doctorate in Health Sciences, Public Health, Health Education or a closely related field and academic experience as a professor at associate or full rank.
– Present an integrated record of teaching, scholarship and service, including service to the discipline and/or professional associations.
– Bring experience in recruitment, supervision and assessment of faculty.
– Be knowledgeable about fiscal management including budget, resource utilization and advocacy for departmental needs.
– Offer strengths in administration of and strategic planning for academic programs.
– Have an understanding of accreditation processes including the requirements for CEPH.
– Exhibit a communication style highlighted by transparency, effective listening skills and program advocacy.
– Present evidence of effectiveness in academic or professional leadership roles.
